Directed by Steven Spielberg and co-written by George Lucas (Executive Producer) the Oscar award-winning ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ was the third in the triology. The story is set in 1938 and tells the tale of adventurer Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) who must rescue his father (Sean Connery) from captivity whilst securing information which will lead him to the legendary Holy Grail before the Nazis get there. River Phoenix plays Young Indy with Alexei Sayle appearing as the Sultan. Filming took place at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood where the sets for the castle interiors were created. The huge temple set was also built here and supported on 80 feet of hydraulics as well as by ten gimbals for the earthquake sequence; construction took 6 weeks. The scenes involving the ship were filmed on a 60x40 foot deck supported by gimbals and a total of 3,600 gallons of water were used whilst shooting this scene! The sequences for the motorcycle escape, the library and catacombs were also shot on sets at Elstree. Whilst a box office success grossing over $474 million worldwide, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade received mixed reviews. Nevertheless, the popularity of the triology lead to ‘Kingdom of the Cystal Skull’ and the return of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones to the big screen 19 years later.
