Inspector Morse is a fictional character created by the author, Colin Dexter. Dramatised for the Independent Television network there were a total of 33 episodes which screened from 1987-2000. It was nominated for and won a number of BAFTA awards and proved to be extremely popular with audiences. Chief Inspector Morse (John Thaw) and his Detective Sergeant, Lewis (Kevin Whately) are presented with a complex series of cases during which time the tale of their personal lives unfolds alongside the main plot. Following the demise of Morse and John Thaw’s death ITV has since produced a popular spin off entitled Lewis with Kevin Whately in the lead role.

    This magnificent mansion house appeared as Hanbury House in the episode entitled ‘Ghost in the Machine’ which was directed by Herbert Wise with screenplay by Julian Mitchell. Sir Julius Hanbury (Michael Godley) and a number of his erotic paintings disappear. Morse and Lewis interview all the occupants at Hanbury Manor and subsequently discover Sir Julius’ body in the mausoleum. This find leads to more questions than answers as to his murder and another murder. Lady Hanbury is played by Patricia Hodge.
