This Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe feature film is about the lifelong romance between the novelist Iris Murdoch and John Bayley. Based on her husband, John Bayley’s book ‘Elegy for Iris’ (1999), the story begins at the University of Oxford where Iris (Kate Winslet) and John (Hugh Bonneville) meet as students, and recounts the love story between the pair. This is a love that never dwindles despite Bayley’s frustration in later years (then played by Jim Broadbent) over Iris’ (then played by Judi Dench) deterioration through Alzheimer’s Disease, until she eventually died in 1999.

Whilst this could not be verified exactly it is likely to be the scene where John and Iris return by car after Janet’s funeral and she tries to jump out the car whilst it is moving. She succeeds. John is devastated and desperately tries to find her in the woodland she seems to have rolled down. He falls and somehow lands next to her! Despite her condition there is a tender moment of recognition from Iris who tells John she loves him.

Southwold >
In addition to the beach, the Southwold area was chosen for the backdrop for two periods when they go to visit their mutual friends Reynolds and Janet Stone once as a young couple (the role of Janet was initially played by Juliet Aubrey) and then later on once the Alzheimer’s had taken a hold (Janet was then played by Penelope Wilton). There is an emotional scene at the bus stop on the Green with Iris and John after they have said goodbye to Janet.
