John Sergeant on the Tourist Trail
Printer friendly version >
Produced for ITV by Mentorn Media and developed by Dan Goldsack, John Sergeant, a British journalist and broadcaster, has returned to the role of tour guide in a factual series which looks at Britain through the eyes of overseas tourists. Their fresh perspectives highlight things we as nationals often take for granted or have simply forgotten about. This witty, rather charmingly delivered series was well received by critics.

Locations used for this production:

  • Leighton Buzzard Railway >
Screened during the final episode of the 1st series, the sequences on the Leighton Buzzard Railway were filmed during the Spring Bank Holiday weekend in May 2009 at a special event recalling the supply lines to the First World War battlefields. The Leighton Buzzard Railway was apparently one of the most intensively used narrow-gauge railways in history, and the large post-war surplus of materials and equipment it carried led to the construction of the sand-carrying line in Leighton Buzzard in 1919. Potentially the best collection of First World War military locomotives in Britain (steam and petrol-engined) was assembled for the shoot, including a French-built steam engine dating from 1916. The crew and an expert on German military railways, who had visited specially from a museum in Frankfurt, was interviewed by John Sergeant. The event coincided with the Leighton Buzzard Railway’s 90th anniversary year - a real celebration opportunity for the volunteers.
