With Rowan Atkinson in the lead role, Johnny English is a British comic parody of James Bond which received mixed reviews. This wasn’t the first encounter Atkinson had had in international espionage having appeared in ‘Never Say Never Again’. The screen play was actually written by Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade with contributions from William Davies. The story is set around the bumbling spy, Johnny English and his bid to fight international crime. The character was actually based on that of another character played by Atkinson for a series of Barclaycard advertisements.
