Holkham Beach >
The opening scenes in episode 1 have Peter on a vast expanse of sandy beach gazing out to sea and reflecting on the loss of his brother, Simon. The beach appears numerous times during the series and is often referred to by Beatrice as ‘Simon’s beach’. For example, in episode 2 Peter and Milly the dog are seen walking leisurely on the beach with Peter wondering when Simon’s body might be washed up. Later in this episode, Peter and Aesta (Katrine de Candole) walk along the beach whilst she explains why she has done what she did with Lyle. At the beginning of episode 3, Peter throws a stick for Milly on an early morning walk. Peter’s phone rings and he tells Mr Snell it is too early for him to call. Meanwhile Milly finds the name plate of a boat and Peter sees a lifeboat with what appears to be 2 survivors. Later in episode 3, Lyle goes deep sea diving to investigate Mr Case’s (Trevor Peacock) boat and why it sank. He gets caught in a current and gets washed up on a beach. A young French girl approaches him and speaks in French so he assumes he’s arrived in France! In episode 5 Peter is back on the beach with Milly. Despite the sunshine he is dressed for rain. Just at that point a horse gallops by with another man on a quad bike alongside. Peter is prepared, but he sunbathers are not and subsequently get rather wet! In a later scene, the beach may have been used for part of the scene where Beatrice has to get help from a group of young men to push Peter’s car off the beach during an approaching tide. Peter returns to the beach at sunset and walks across the sand reflecting on Simon and what has become of him. During the opening sequence of episode 6, Peter and Beatrice walk along the beach and she tells him it is time to move on from Simon’s death. Little does she know about Simon’s debts. During episode 6, however Beatrice and Peter return to the beach after hearing the news that Simon might not be dead after all.

A key scene in episode 1 has Beatrice arriving unannounced stating that she has discharged herself from hospital and has come to stay. Another key scene has Peter alone in his office with clients milling about everywhere, including Mrs Thing, and he doesn’t cope well. In episode 6 Peter finds he can escape from Mrs Thing no more as she has an appointment. Even after she has left Peter still struggles to remember her name! Towards the end of this episode Peter has a visitor, Honor O’Sullivan (Kelly Campbell) who tells him that she is pregnant with Simon’s child. At the end of this scene Lyle deliberately walks on the grass to prove a point that he can despite being told not too – Peter can do nothing other than follow! In episode 1, the viewers are introduced to the town’s pub, The Startled Duck which is actually The Greyhound in Swaffham located on the market square. In the first scene where the pub appears Mr Snell walks past the pub and greets Ted (Thomas Fisher), the pub owner. Both characters make regular appearances in future episodes. For example in episode 2 the Dyke poles are delivered but Mr Snell is not convinced they are of the correct quality. Lyle is therefore called upon to test them. Snell, Peter, and Ted regroup at the pub later to come up with a plan so Lyle can win the competition. Later in the episode Peter, Gloria and Lyle go to the pub to commiserate with Lyle who has been left at the altar. In episode 5 Peter and Lyle discuss the intricacies of Mr and Mrs Collins’ marriage and the fact that Mrs Collins is having difficulty accepting her husband has become a cross-dresser. In a later scene, Gloria is encouraged to go speed dating with Beatrice but following her a conversation with Ted she decides that speed dating and Beatrice’s ideas of entertainment are really not for her and goes home. Whilst his 1st attempt was not successful as he lands in the middle of the dyke rather than on the other side, with the right pole he has more success and is persuaded to compete in the annual competition. However, it appears there are health and safety issues to overcome! Lyle does manage to compete but things don’t exactly go to plan. In episode 5 Beatrice borrows Peter’s car and takes Gloria on an outing in an effort to befriend her – it proves to be an outing Gloria is unlikely to forget quickly.
