Directed and written by the actor, Charles Dance, Ladies in Lavender was based on a short story by William J. Locke; this was Charles Dance’s directorial debut. The plot finds two elderly sisters Ursula (Judi Dench) and Janet (Maggie Smith) Widdington living a quiet life in a Cornish fishing village in the 1930s. They nurse the Polish stranger they find washed up on the beach near their home back to health. The young man cannot speak English but through broken German they discover his name is Andrea (Daniel Brühl) and that he is a gifted violinist. Ursula and Janet become fond of Andrea but the rest of the village is not so convinced by him. Much of the music was performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with violin solos by Joshua Bell.
