Printer friendly version >
Written and directed by Joel Hopkins this charming romantic drama was nominated for 2 Golden Globes and was critically well received. The film tells the tale of a couple who have a chance encounter in an airport and their developing relationship. Divorcee, Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) arrives in London for his daughter, Susan’s (Liane Balaban) wedding with the threat of job loss looming. When he misses the plane home he is fired and takes solace in the airport bar where he strikes up a conversation with Kate Walker (Emma Thompson), a 40 something, singleton with a very, very demanding mother (Eileen Atkins) who collects statistics from airline passengers.

Locations used for this production:

  • Stansted Airport >
Whilst the storyline had Harvey arriving at London Heathrow airport, BAA Stansted was used for the bulk of the airport scenes. Specific scenes shot on location at Stansted included Kate’s arrival at the airport where she greets Aggie (Wendy Mae Brown), her colleague and Oonagh (Bronagh Gallagher) who has arranged a blind date for Kate who is not so sure; Harvey’s arrival in the UK when he collects his bags and then brushes dismissively past Kate as she tries to ask him questions to complete her survey; the scenes depicting Harvey’s return to the airport to catch the flight home and him subsequently missing the plane whilst Kate is on duty elsewhere in the airport; Harvey then calls his boss Marvin (Richard Schiff) in the next sequence only to be told he is fired; potentially the bar scene where he finally meets Kate and strikes up a conversation, although this has not been verified absolutely, followed by the sequence where they say goodbye; and finally the scene where Harvey returns to the airport looking for Kate only to be sent by Aggie and Oonagh to her class to find her. Stansted accommodated approximately 120 cast and crew members ‘airside’ under extremely tight security during the filming despite the heightened state of security at the time in the UK. This would have been difficult to accommodate at many other airports given the scale of filming, the need for heightened security and the fact that Stansted is a fully operational London airport.
