Created by Simon Raven for Thames Television, this comic drama series was the 1st television adaptation of a novel written by Nancy Mitford of the same name. Following the death of Lord Montdore’s (Richard Hurndall) sister Patricia (Ann Queensberry), Polly (Natasha Lewer) his daughter marries a middle-aged widower, Lothario Dougdale (Job Stewart) known as ‘Boy’. Her mother (Vivian Pickles) wants nothing more to do with Polly as a result, largely because Boy had been her lover some years previously. Her parents subsequently pass their affections onto the charming, if rather camp, Cedric Hampton (Michael Cochrane) who is heir to Lord Montdore’s title. The result is a transformation of Lady Montdore, leading to a reconciliation with Polly and Cedric’s confession to Fanny (Kate Valentine) of an affair between him and Boy! Aunt Sadie is played by Judi Dench.
