Based on the novel by Gustave Flaubert and considered to be is finest, Madame Bovary has been adapted for the screen a number of times. This television adaptation was produced by the BBC with screenplay by Heidi Thomas and was both BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated. It tells the tale of a young woman, Emma (Frances O’Connor) with high romantic ideals who marries a widowed doctor, Charles Bovary (Hugh Bonneville). Boredom ultimately leads her to infidelity and financial ruin.
