Directed by James Ivory and produced by Channel Four Films and Merchant Ivory Productions, this Oscar-nominated romantic drama was based on the novel by E.M. Forster of the same name, although there were a number of modifications for the screen by writer, Kit Hesketh-Harvey. The story tells the tale of Maurice Hall (James Wilbey) and his wrestle with homosexuality. Set in Edwardian England it begins when Maurice is just a child (Orlando Wells) through to Cambridge University where he falls in love with a male friend, Clive Durham (Hugh Grant) but it is clear Clive intends to marry for social position despite their relationship. Despairingly Maurice seeks medical help in an attempt to rid himself of his feelings towards men and undergoes hypnosis with Dr Lasker-Jones (Ben Kingsley). At the invitation of the Durham’s Maurice then goes to their house for the weekend and meets Alec Scudder (Rupert Graves), the game keeper. As a result of the relationship that develops between them, Maurice once again seeks hypnosis.
