Created by Julian Richards, Meet the Ancestors is a popular BBC documentary series. The series first screened in 1996 and at time of writing has been followed by a further six series. Meet the Ancestors has proven so popular that a number of other BBC documentary series have been commissioned involving Julian Richards. The show explores archaeological excavation sites and follows the reconstruction of human remains to enable the audience to come face to face with our ancestors. Filming takes place both in the UK and overseas.

    Series 3, Episode 3 entitled ‘The Domesday Fire’ examined the remains of an execution victim killed in medieval times and found in one of 600 graves. The exact location is unknown, although the suburb of Cambridge called Cherry Hinton is listed as a location on IMdB.

    Series 7, Episode 3 entitled ‘The Hunt for Darwin’s Beagle’ was filmed at a secret location in the team’s search for the remains of HMS Beagle, the ship used by Charles Darwin.

    Regrettably it is not clear which episode this location featured in, but it is likely to have been Series 3, Episode 3 given filming occurred in the area for this series in ‘The Domesday Fire’.

    Series 4, Episode 6 entitled ‘Treasures of the Dark Age’ took the team to an archaeological site near the city. The recreated face of the Saxon Woman from this episode forms part of the Peterborough Museum collection.

    Series 2, Episode 1 entitled ‘Warrior’ filmed at this location where the remains of an Anglo-Saxon warrior in full battle armour, complete with horse and what appeared to be armed children, had been discovered in 1997.
