Produced for Channel 4, David Starkey has attempted to chart the complete history of the English and then later, British Monarchy, through a comprehensive account of the lives and times of the country’s kings and queens. Brought to television screens in 2004 over 4 series, Monarchy began with Alfred the Great who took England on its first intrepid steps out of the Dark Ages and concluded with The Windsors.

    Exact episode unknown. However, in the 2nd episode of the 1st series entitled ‘Aengla Land’ the Earl of Brithnorth and his men suffered defeat at the Battle of Maldon (991AD). Britnorth’s tomb lies in Ely although his body is minus its head suggesting he lost that to the Vikings!
