Directed and with screenplay by Douglas McGrath this Golden Globe nominated adaptation is based on the novel entitled The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens. Whilst a drama, there are a number of comic moments. The story begins with the Nickleby’s who enjoy a comfortable life until the father’s (Andrew Havill) death leaves them devoid of any form of income. Nicholas (young child: Henry McGrath; boy: Hugh Mitchell; man: Charlie Hunnam), his mother (Stella Gonet) and his sister Kate (young child: Poppy Rogers; girl: Jessie Lou Roberts; woman: Romola Garai) approach Uncle Ralph Nickleby (Christopher Plummer) for assistance, but rather than welcoming them to his home he finds employment for Nicholas as a tutor at a school in Yorkshire. Meanwhile Kate suffers in the role of seamstress for the lecherous Sir Mulberry Hawk (Edward Fox). Nicholas is however determined that they be re-united. The all star cast also included: Tom Courtenay (Newman Hoggs), Jim Broadbent (Mr Squeers) and Juliet Stevenson (Mrs Squeers). With a budget of $10 million, Nicholas Nickleby was critically well received and grossed $3.6 million. It filmed at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood and used locations in Yorkshire, London and Cambridge.
