Based on a novel by Arthur Kopit by the same name, with screenplay by Michael Tolkin and Anthony Minghella and direction from Rob Marshall (Chicago), this BAFTA and Oscar nominated musical romance tells the tale of film director, Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) who is finding it difficult to find harmony in his personal and professional life which is stifling his creativity. He also has ‘various’ relationships to manage with ‘various’ women. These include: his wife and producer, Luisa (Marion Cotillard) with whom he has a rather dramatic existence; his attractive mistress, Carla Albanese (Penelope Cruz); his film star muse, Claudia (Nicole Kidman); his mother (Sophia Loren); and a prostitute from his younger days, Saraghina (‘Fergi’ – Stacy Ann Ferguson from the band, Black Eyed Peas). Nine also stars Dame Judi Dench who plays Lilli, Contini’s confidant and costume designer, and Kate Hudson who plays Stephanie, a fashion journalist. Prior to release reviewers praised the staged musical scenes. Nine was however BAFTA nominated for best Make up and Hair and Oscar nominated for Costume Design, Best Art Direction, Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Penelope Cruz) and Best Original Song.

Nene Valley Railway >
Wansford station on the Nene Valley Railway formed the backdrop to a romantic reunion between onscreen lovers, Penelope Cruz and Daniel Day-Lewis. One of the platforms (3) was transformed into a scene from 1960s Italy and a short sequence appears in the trailer. Filming took place during a half-term holiday which meant that quite a few school children and their parents/guardians had a surprise when they arrived at the station to find a film crew and screen stars acting out their scenes. Whilst Wansford Station was chosen due to the fact that Nene Valley Railway is one of the few railways in Britain with European rolling stock, there was a problem using this location due to the presence of the busy road, the A1, as traffic could been seen. The crew therefore had to build a fake water tower across the track to act as a shield.
