Based at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood and directed by Richard Eyre, Notes on a Scandal was based on a novel by Zoe Heller with screenplay by Patrick Marber; there are a number of distinct variations between the film and the novel. Nominated for 4 Oscars and 3 BAFTAs it won numerous smaller awards, was critically well received and grossed $49.7 million worldwide with a production budget of $15 million. Notes on a Scandal told the tale of a friendship between a young teacher, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) and her aging female colleague, Barbara Covett (Judie Dench). Events take a considerably darker turn as Barbara’s manipulating and vengeful nature emerges and Sheba has a relationship with Steven (Andrew Simpson), a pupil at the school. Bill Nighy plays Sheba’s husband, Richard.
