Directed by Don Chaffey this fantasy adventure was largely filmed in Spain and the Canary Islands. However there were no active volcanoes so the production team constructed a 6-7 foot volcano on the backlot of the former ABPC studios in Borehamwood (now Elstree Studios) – the scenes showing lava flows and volcanic explosions were created with oatmeal, dry ice, red dye and wallpaper paste! One Million Years B.C. was a remake of the 1940 One Million B.C. and set in pre-historic times. It tells the tale of Tumak, a caveman who is exiled from his tribe. He is subsequently rescued by the Shell Tribe from a giant turtle and taken to their village where Loana (Raquel Welch) looks after him. Ultimately he finds himself in trouble with them too.
