Other Boleyn Girl, The
Printer friendly version >
Based on the popular fictional novel of the same name by Philippa Gregory which was inspired by the life of Mary Boleyn and the interaction between the Howard-Boleyn family in their bid for power in the court of King Henry VIII, the screenwriter Peter Morgan created his adaptation by using the book as a broad guideline. He subsequently dramatizes the account of the lives of Mary (Scarlett Johansson) and Anne (Natalie Portman) Boleyn loosely around historical fact. Born into the aristocracy and following the failure of Katherine of Aragon (Ana Torrent) to produce a male heir for Henry (Eric Bana), the film follows the scheming of the Duke of Norfolk, Thomas Howard (David Morrissey) and Thomas Boleyn (Mark Rylance) who set about to further their own political ambitions through the sisters. Based at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, the production team used two locations in the East of England:

  • Ely Cathedral >
A number of key scenes were filmed in the Cathedral including the bedroom scene where Katherine of Aragon suffers a miscarriage. She is deeply distressed as the still born child was a boy and apologies to her daughter Mary (Kizzie Fassett) for her failure asking that one of her attendants inform the King. The 2nd scene shows Henry, who is now besotted by Anne receiving the news that Rome will not dissolve his marriage to Katherine. He is infuriated and demands that the King’s Council find a way to rid him of Katherine. The 3rd scene follows the rape of Anne by Henry. Having dissolved his marriage to Katherine, Henry marries Anne with Ely Cathedral forming a magnificent backdrop to the ceremony and subsequent coronation of Anne as Queen. The final scene has Mary returning from the execution of her sister to collect Elizabeth, Anne and Henry’s daughter. She strides purposefully through Ely Cathedral, which provides a stunning backdrop for King Henry VIII’s court, and leaves never to return.
