Directed by Michael Austin, Princess Caraboo was set in early 19th century Bristol and based on a real-life character. A beautiful young stranger (Phoebe Cates) who speaks a strange language is taken in by Mr (Jim Broadbent) and Mrs Worrall (Wendy Hughes) who are subsequently persuaded by their Butler, Frixos (Kevin Kline) to have her charged with begging. During the hearing she claims to be a princess, is believed and welcomed back by the Worralls. Only Gutch (Stephen Rea), a reporter remains suspicious and begins his own investigations. John Lithgow plays Professor Wilkinson and Jerry Hall plays Lady Motley).
