Based on the actual events leading up to and beyond Princess Diana's death in a car accident in Paris, France. The film tells the story of the newly elected Prime Minister, Tony Blair (Micheal Sheen) trying to persuade a reluctant Her Majesty Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) to take a public approach to Diana's death and funeral when she personally feels the family should remain hidden at Balmoral Castle. Furthermore, the Establishment do not feel it appropriate to honour Diana, the 'People's Princess', as a member of the Royal Family. The heartbroken public feel the opposite and the media and public opinion mounts. The Queen continues to struggle presenting the Prime Minister with a challenge in his earnest endeavours to reach a compromise between a private tragedy for the Royal family and the public's demand for a display of mourning.
