The Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated Quills was directed by Philip Kaufman and based on a play by Doug Wright who also wrote the screenplay. Whilst purely fictional, the film tells the imagined tale of the writer, Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush), who was locked away in Charenton Asylum overseen by Abbe du Coulmier (Joaquin Phoenix) who allows him to continue to publish his scandalous works through laundress, Madeline LeClerc (Kate Winslet). Doctor Royer-Collard (Michael Caine) is sent to Charenton to put an end to the Marquis’ work. Quills was critically well received and whilst it had a limited distribution within the art house cinema network, it eventually grossed $17.9 million worldwide.
