  • Hatfield Business Park (formerly British Aerospace site) >
Now part of the University of Hertfordshire campus in Hatfield the aerodrome was used to create a number of temporary sets for the town scenes set in Northern France which were in the line of fire from enemy and allied fire. The initial sets were built to reflect the badly dombed Neuville. On arrival in the first town, the squad come under fire and suffer casualties. Private Daniel Jackson (Barry Pepper) is a crack shot is called upon to identify and despatch the snipper. Having succeeded they gradually move through the town and come face to face with a group of German solders following a freak accident. Captain Fred Hamill (Ted Danson) and his squad come to the rescue. The search for Private Ryan continues as the squad leave the town crosing occupied Northern France towards Ramelle following a lead from one of Hamill's men. It is possible these landscape scenes were also filmed on the aerodrome but cannot be verified. Eventually Miller leads his men into Ramelle, also built for the film. Whilst they search comes to an end as they find Ryan, he is not prepared to leave his commrades to the mercy of the approaching German army in their bid to defend the bridge in the hope that the advancing allied forces will arrive in time. Miller takes counsel from Sergeant Mike Horvath (Tom Sizemore), who has become a friend, and they agree they will stay despite the odds being loaded against them. Miller takes command placing his men strategically around the town. What follows is a brutal battle with heavy casulties for C Company and a message to Ryan that will stay with him for the rest of his life. Following the filming the temporary sets were dismantled and are no longer in evidence.
