Produced for ITV, Sharpe is the hero of the Bernard Cornwell novels which begin in the Napoleonic Wars. Sharpe’s Eagle was the second in the series and screened in 1993. Directed by Tom Clegg, this episode tells the tale of Lieutenant Captain Richard Sharpe (Sean Bean) who is commissioned with his chosen men to accompany the arrogant Sir Henry Simmerson (Michael Cochrane) and his South Essex Regiment to explode a bridge. Lieutenants Gibbons (Neil Dudgeon) and Berry (Daniel Craig) are less than impressed with Sharpe due to his lowly birth. The mission does not go well to the detriment of the regiment due to Simmerson’s incompetence and poor leadership. Sharpe attempts to restore their reputation by capturing a French army flag featuring an eagle and is subsequently promoted to Captain. Simmerson is disgusted and orders Berry to get rid of Sharpe, but Sergeant Harper (Daragh O’Malley) comes to the rescue … just in time!
