England, the summer of '66 and the country is about to be consumed by World Cup Fever. For 12-year-old Bernie (Gregg Sulkin), the biggest day of his life is looming, the day he becomes a man - his Bar Mitzvah. Bernie believes his Bar Mitzvah is about to change his life for the better, he'll no longer be the kid everyone ignores and begins to make plans for the biggest Bar Mitzvah there has ever been. Unfortunately for Bernie, things don't quite go according to plan!

Excitement spreads around the country as England prepare for kick off at the World Cup final. Not so for Bernie, as predicted, only a handful of relatives turn up for his Bar Mitzvah. Amidst the chaos and disappointment, Bernie runs off. Meanwhile, Bernie's parents discover their son's meticulously laid plans for the biggest Bar Mitzvah ever and they realise how much this day meant to him. Bernie's father tracks him down and decides to make it up to his son the only way he can - by taking him to the biggest celebration in England that day - the World Cup final. Scenes of Bernie and his father driving to Wembley Stadium were filmed in Borehamwood. Father and son are listening to the game on the radio and are jubilant to hear England equalize with Germany. In a dash to make the end of the game, Bernie's father breaks a habit of a lifetime and speeds up, despite his obsessive compulsive disorder which usually see's him driving painfully slowly, only to be stopped by the police for speeding.

Unfortunately for Bernie, things don't quite go according to plan. Amid World Cup fever, house fires and his father's failing business, Bernie suddenly realizes the lavish hotel party that he had been promised is replaced first by the Shamrock Function Room which comes with a house band included, The Rocking Shamrocks and then by a tiny affair in his parent's front room. Scenes at the Shamrock Function Room where filmed at Borehamwood Village Hall which is not open to the public.
