Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Printer friendly version >
Nominated for a number of awards this American pulp science fiction adventure story was written by Kerry Conran; it was also his directorial debut. Set in an ‘alternate’ 1930s New York, Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a reporter who is investigating the disappearance of a number of scientists and subsequently uncovers a plot to take over the world. The film was based at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood where 3 different blue screen soundstages were erected making this one of the first films to be filmed almost entirely against a digital backdrop. With its all star cast including Jude Law (Sky Captain), Angelina Jolie (Commander Franky Cook), Michael Gambon (Morris - the editor of the New York Chronicle), Omid Djalili (Kaji) and Lawrence Olivier (who played Dr Totenkopf posthumously), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow paid homage to The Mechanical Monsters cartoon which was created in 1941. Whilst it was relatively well received, the film was not the commercial success anticipated.
