Directed by Tim Burton the story is based on a story by Washington Irving entitled The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and stars Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane and had an all star cast including Miranda Richardson as Lady Van Tassel, Sir Michael Gambon as Baltus Van Tassel and Christopher Walken as Hessian Horseman; Christopher Lee had a cameo part as Burgomaster. In 1799, a nervous police constable, Ichabod Crane, leaves New York City to investigate a series of grisly murders in the upstate town of Sleepy Hollow. Whilst being based in New York City and upstate New York, Sleepy Hollow was largely filmed at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire where the crew built an entire sound stage for the picture and used locations in England as doubles for New York locations. The town of Sleepy Hollow was constructed in Buckinghamshire and a number of other set builds took place at Shepperton Studios. The Oscar-winning Sleepy Hollow achieved both box office success and critical acclaim, although there was criticism over the amount of violence and bloodshed. Tom Stoppard, whilst remaining unaccredited by the Writers Guild of America, put in place a number of re-writes.
