The opening scenes transport the audience to 1956 as Sylvia cycles frenetically through the city's historic streets. As an aspiring poet she is striving for recognition of her work and meets Ted at a party. In the early days of their relationship, there is a charming scene where Ted punts Sylvia down the River Cam framed by stunning views of Cambridge's colleges. Filming also occurred at Kings College, St John’s College, in Trinity Hall and in Trinity Lane but these scenes could not be verified exactly.
