This popular gritty police drama about the internal power struggles of a police force was created by Jeffrey Caine and produced by the BBC. A different director per series was commissioned on the production. It ran for 5 seasons with a total of 35 episodes. Chief Constable Alan Cade (Martin Shaw) finds he has to juggle the pressures of work with the problems of home life. Critics declared The Chief to be ‘creatively filmed’ with ‘realistic, gritty plots’. It was based at The Old Brewery studio in Norwich and with Norfolk providing the perfect backdrop for the rural scenes.
