This black and white Oscar and BAFTA nominated classic World War II drama was based on a true life story and is for the most part historically factual. Directed by Michael Anderson and based on the books by Paul Brickhill and Guy Gibson, the film is set in 1943. Dr Barnes Wallis (Michael Redgrave) has developed a bouncing bomb to destroy the Ruhr dams in Germany. Anxious to stop the Nazi war machine, RAF 617 Squadron is assigned to Operation Chastise, the mission to bomb the Ruhr reservoirs to flood Germany’s industrial base. The Squadron of Lancaster bombers is lead by Wing Commander Guy Gibson (Richard Todd). Whilst much of the location filming occurred in Derbyshire and The Lake District, The Dam Busters was based at the former Associated British Elstree Studios which had been located in Borehamwood.
