This BAFTA nominated family fantasy adventure was filmed at Thorn-EMI Studios. Directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz (both puppeteers) and the creators of The Muppet Show. The animatronics were deemed groundbreaking for the era and all the characters were Muppets. The Dark Crystal is set upon a far away planet called Thra in another time. 1,000 years previously the mysterious Crystal of Truth was damaged by one of the urSkeks, the race which had dominated Thra and the guardians for the crystal. It then became the Dark Crystal, and an age of chaos subsequently began. Despite the mixed critical reviews and audience responses around the globe, The Dark Crystal has since developed cult status.
