Based on the novel by Graham Greene, the screen adaptation of the same name was directed by Otto Preminger (his last film) with screenplay by Tom Stoppard. Maurice Castle (Nicol Williamson), an aging bureaucrat working for MI6, is looking forward to a quiet life in the suburbs with his wife, Sarah (Iman) but instead he is drawn into a scandal which will challenge his loyalty. Richard Attenborough stars as Colonel Daintry and John Geilgud plays Brigadier Tomlinson. The film was based at Shepperton Studios near London and largely filmed on location in Kenya. However, at least one location was used in the East of England.
