Line of Beauty, The

This BBC adaptation of love, class and money during the period that is now known as Thatcher’s Britain was based on a novel of the same name by Alan Hollinghurst, which won the Man Booker Prize. Nick Guest (Dan Stephens), a friend of Toby Fedden (Oliver Coleman), is invited to stay at the Fedden family home in London. Nick has a modest family background and suddenly finds himself propelled into a world manipulated by wealth, power and drugs whilst attending house parties in country mansions and political soirees. In the meantime, having been in love with Toby since their days at Oxford together but to no avail, Nick finds himself falling in love for the second time with Leo (Don Gilet).

  • Borehamwood >
    A private house near Borehamwood wood selected for the interiors to reflect the 1980’s Fedden family home in West London. A number of key scenes were filmed in the house including the one where Nick meets the Fedden family over dinner and the one where Nick and Catherine Fedden (Hayley Attwell) begin to get to know each other and she asks him what it is like to be gay. Later in the story it emerges that Catherine is a manic-depressive and self-harms; shocked Nick is not sure how to help but does his best to support her. The Feddens also host a political dinner which was also shot on location at the house. Following the dinner, the women retire and leave the men to their cigars and brandy. Catherine causes a scene returning home distressed. Her father Gerald Fedden (Tim McInnerny), a Tory MP is less than impressed.

  • Wrotham Park, Barnet >
    Another privately ownedr house, Wrotham Park, which is not open to the public but is a conference and wedding venue, was used for filming. The scenes shot on location at Wrotham include the visit to Mrs Fedden’s (Alex Krige) brother’s house, Lord Kessler (John Standing) where family and friends are gathering for Toby’s 21st birthday party. The Feddens arrive at the house and greet each other. In a later scene outside the house Catherine introduces Nick to her photographer friend, Russel (Justin Salinger) with whom she is having a relationship. Interior scenes include the one where Gerald Fedden gives a speech to guests; the disco scene where an old college friend of Nick’s, Wani Ouradi (Alex Wyndham) offers him cocaine which begins a relationship a year later that Nick had anticipated; the one where guests who don’t appreciate disco music sit listening to the string quartet; and finally having had too much to drink Nick wakes up alone on a sofa in the morning.
