The BAFTA nominated prequel to Henry James' Turn of the Screw, The Nightcomers largely filmed on location in Cambridgeshire. Directed by Michael Winner and written by Michael Hastings, this thriller recounted the series of events which preceded the deaths of Peter Quint (played by Marlon Brando) and Ms Jessel (Stephanie Beacham) in Turn of the Screw. The story is set in Victorian England. Brother and sister, Flora (Verna Harvey) and Miles (Christopher Ellis) are teenagers who suddenly lose their parents. As a result they find themselves in the care of their housekeeper, Mrs Grose (Thora Hird), Ms Jessel, the governess and Quint, the gardener. As the story unfolds, Jessel and Quint’s behaviour begins to have a profound and disturbing effect on Flora and Miles. Despite the BAFTA for Brando’s performance, The Nightcomers received mixed reviews.
