Based on a story by Emeric Pressburger with direction by Vernon Sewell and Gordon Wellesley, this black and white World War II drama tells the tale of the owner of a Dutch shipyard, Japp van Leyden (Ralph Richardson), in occupied Holland. Prior to occupation van Leyden had made submarines for the Dutch navy, but when the Nazis arrive he is forced to collaborate and make submarines for the German Protector Von Schiffer (Esmond Knight). Van Leyden and is wife, Helene (Googie Withers) are however patriotic and manage to work out a way to ‘appear’ to do what the Germans want whilst sabotaging their own vessels.
