Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s black and white U Boat espionage drama was set in the Orkneys during the First World War. In 1917 a U Boat Captain (Conrad Veidt) is sent to the area to destroy the British fleet at Scarpa Flow and puts ashore on the Orkney Islands. The production was based at the former Denham Studios which were in Buckinghamshire and filmed on location in the Orkneys and Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire. The Spy in Black was the first collaboration between Powell and Pressburger and was named as one of the top ten films of 1939.
