This British Hammar Horror film was directed by Roy Ward Baker and set in Austria. It is based on the J. Sheridan Le Fanu novel Carmilla, and tells the story of a lesbian vampire, Marcilla alias Carmilla (Ingrid Pitt) who is becomes a house guest of General von Spielsdorf (Peter Cushing). Marcilla ravishes young girls in the village until the father of one of her victims decides to take his revenge. The lesbian theme was daring at the time as the film was released in 1970. The Vampire Lovers was filmed at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood and was part of a triology with the others being ‘Lust for a Vampire’ and the ‘Twins of Evil’; they too have a lesbian theme.
