The Oscar-nominated BAFTA-winning The Wings of the Dove was directed by Iain Softley. The film has been adapted for the screen from a novel of the same name by Henry James and tells the story of an impoverished woman, Kate Croy (Helena Bonham Carter) who has chosen a privileged life with her wealthy Aunt Maude (Charlotte Rampling) rather than her journalist lover, Merton Densher (Linus Roache) to whom she is secretly engaged. Kate befriends an American heiress, Milly Theale (Alison Elliott) who is gravely ill and comes up with a plot to obtain her fortune upon her death. The novel was also adapted for the stage and for television twice. The film was well received amongst critics and did favourably at the box-office. Whilst most interiors were filmed at Shepperton Studios The Wings of the Dove used locations in Italy, London and the greater south-east for exteriors and outdoor settings.
