Nominated for a Golden Globe and directed by Roger Spottiswoode, this is the 18th James Bond picture and the 2nd to star Pierce Brosnan as 007. It was not based on a novel by Ian Fleming as there were no more books to be adapted. Tomorrow Never Dies was therefore scripted by Bruce Feirstein. The plot concentrates on Bond’s attempts to stop a media mogul, Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) who plans to spark a war between China and the UK. During the mission, Bond seduces Carver’s wife, Paris (Teri Hatcher) who was also an ex-girlfriend, and subsequently recovers the stolen GPS encoder from Carver. He then travels to the South China Sea to determine if the missiles are still aboard the recently sunken British frigate only to discover one is missing. During the mission he meets and joins forces with Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh), a Chinese spy who is also assigned to the same case. They collaborate and take on Carver on board his stealth ship to prevent him firing the stolen British missile at Beijing. With a budget of $110 million, Tomorrow Never Dies grossed $333 million worldwide. Judi Dench plays M and Ricky Jay plays Henry Gupta. Since the production team were unable to use Leavesden Studios as Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace was filming there, they took over the former Park Street Studios, then known as Frogmore Studios, nearby for a variety of set builds.
