Adapted from the comic book of the same name by Alan Moore and David Lloyd and directed by James Teigue, V for Vendetta is set in a futuristic fascist Britain. A mysterious freedom fighter (Hugo Weaver) appears one evening dressed as Guy Fawkes and rescues Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman) from corrupt policemen who are threatening her. What follows is a series of events designed by the character V to destabilise the government, effect socio-political change and take revenge for what was done to him through a scientific experiment. Under the instructions of the High Chancellor Adam Sutler (John Hurt), Detective Chief Inspector Eric Finch (Stephen Rea) pursues V throughout who always manages to remain one step ahead. Evey initially helps V and stays with him for protection, but when she realises he is murdering government officials she escapes and seeks refuge with Gordon Deitrich (Stephen Fry), a well-known TV personality and also one of her superiors. However, it does not end there and it does not end well for either of them. V for Vendetta was critically well received grossing $132.5 million in the box office with a budget of $54 million.
