Directed by Mira Nair and based on a novel of the same name by William Makepeace Thackeray, this very visual adaptation of Vanity Fair was nominated for the prestigious Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival. The plot has an ambitious, Becky Sharp (child: Angelica Mandy; adult: Reese Witherspoon) using all her wits, charm and beauty to rise out of poverty into society. The 2004 adaptation portrayed a very different character and also had an all star cast including Gabriel Byrne (Marquess of Steyne), Romola Garai (Amelia Sedley), Rhys Ifans (William Dobbin), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (George Osborne), Bob Hoskins (Sir Pitt Crawley), Geraldine McEwan (Lady Southdown), Jim Broadbent (Mr Osborne) and James Purefoy (Rawdon Crawley). It did however receive mixed reviews and did not do well in the box office.
