The award-winning Waking the Dead is one of the BBC's most popular dramas. The series is about the Met's Cold Case Unit which was set up to reinvestigate old cases where new evidence emerges. The team uses advanced techniques in forensic science to get to the truth and often takes risks to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In series 3 Old Leigh village in Leigh-on-Sea was used as a backdrop for an episode which is likely to have been called 'Walking on Water' and features the SS Richard Montgomery, an American Liberty ship built during World War II and subsequently wrecked in the Thames Estuary in 1944. The area around the wreck was then used as the dumping ground for a small fishing boat containing three bodies. At the beginning of the episode, Boyd is captured standing amongst the gardens on Marine Parade in Leigh gazing out to sea. A number of locations were used during the filming including The Crooked Billet pub, which experienced a name change, and the veranda of the Broadwalk restaurant.
