Withnail and I
Printer friendly version >
Directed and written by Bruce Robinson this comedy drama is actually based on Robinson’s own personal experiences during the 1960s and has since developed cult status. The story is actually set in 1969, and opens with 2 unemployed actors, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and ‘I’ (Marwood in the screenplay and played by Paul McGann) deciding to leave their shabby Camden flat in London for a well deserved holiday in a cottage in the country, courtesy of Withnail’s gay Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths). What follows are a series of comic events often involving all three characters to varying degrees. Withnail and I was only produced with a budget of £1.1 million and was Grant’s first major role in a feature film.
